Overview

The Everest Base Camp Trek with Kala Patthar is one of the world’s most iconic trekking journeys, offering a mix of adventure, cultural exploration, and breathtaking natural beauty. This trek takes you to the base camp of the world’s highest peak, Mount Everest (8,848.86m), and provides an additional highlight: the ascent to Kala Patthar (5,545m), known for its unparalleled panoramic views of Everest and neighboring peaks.

The journey begins in Kathmandu with a scenic flight to Lukla, the gateway to the Khumbu region. From Lukla, you’ll trek through picturesque Sherpa villages, dense rhododendron forests, and along the rushing Dudh Koshi River, crossing iconic suspension bridges draped in prayer flags. Villages like Namche Bazaar and Tengboche offer opportunities to experience Sherpa culture, visit monasteries, and acclimatize to the altitude.

As you ascend, the terrain transforms into rugged, high-altitude landscapes with dramatic views of snow-capped giants like Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Nuptse. You’ll pass through charming villages like Dingboche and Lobuche before reaching Everest Base Camp (5,364m), the staging area for climbers attempting to summit the world's tallest mountain. Standing at base camp, surrounded by towering peaks and the iconic Khumbu Glacier, is a humbling and awe-inspiring experience.

The trek culminates with an early morning hike to Kala Patthar, a viewpoint offering the best close-up views of Mount Everest’s summit, especially during sunrise. From this vantage point, you’ll also enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding Himalayan range, including peaks like Pumori, Changtse,Lingthren, Khumbuche, Nuptse and the South Col, Lhotse Face along with beautiful Amadablam in the far.

This trek combines physical challenge with cultural immersion, as you interact with the resilient Sherpa people and visit their sacred monasteries. It requires a good level of fitness and proper acclimatization due to the high altitude, but the rewards—both visual and emotional—are unmatched.

Key highlights of the trek include:

  • Standing at Everest Base Camp amidst a sea of glaciers and peaks.
  • Witnessing the sunrise over Everest from Kala Patthar.
  • Exploring the vibrant Sherpa culture in Namche Bazaar.
  • Visiting Tengboche Monastery, the spiritual heart of the Khumbu region.
  • Experiencing the dramatic landscapes of the Himalayas, from lush forests to glacial moraines.

The trek typically takes 12-15 days, including acclimatization days and the return journey to Kathmandu. It's a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that leaves trekkers with unforgettable memories of the majestic Himalayas.

Traveller Useful Information

New Guidelines for Trekking and Permit Costs

In an effort to better control tourism in the Everest region, Nepal recently updated its rules and fees for trekking permits.

The Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit, which costs NPR 3,000 per person,(1500NPR for SAARC nationals and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit, which varies by nationality, are now essential permits for trekkers. The entrance fee is NPR 2,000 per person for Chinese and SAARC nationals, and NPR 3,000 per person for other foreigners.

These fees support local community development, trail upkeep, and environmental conservation. Special exemptions are granted to children under ten years old, diplomats, and VIPs, provided they present valid documentation.

Point:

  • SAARC and Chinese nationals- 2000+1500=3500 (PLRM+SNP)
  • Other country- 3000+3000=6000

Rules and Fees for Flights to Lukla

Significant adjustments have been made to flight operations for passengers opting to fly to Lukla. The majority of flights to Lukla now depart from Ramechhap Airport due to the increased congestion at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport. Trekkers must drive to Ramechhap from Kathmandu for four to five hours before taking a plane to Lukla. A round-trip ticket from Ramechhap to Lukla costs about USD 400 per person. Due to the extreme weather, flights to Lukla frequently experience delays or cancellations. Additionally, because of the airport's difficult approach and short runway, pilots flying to Lukla need specific training and certification.

Conditions of the Road to Surke (As an Alternative to Lukla Flight)

Reaching Surke by road is an option for people who don't want to fly to Lukla, but it's a difficult and drawn-out trip. The first step for travelers is to drive from Kathmandu to Salleri or Phaplu, which takes about eight to ten hours on winding, mountainous roads. Trekkers must walk through numerous villages and rocky paths for two to three days to get to Surke from Salleri or Phaplu. Road conditions can be erratic, particularly during the monsoon season when muddy roads and landslides can seriously slow down traffic.

Trekking's Best Seasons

The pre-monsoon (March–May) and post-monsoon (October–November) seasons are the best times to trek to Everest Base Camp. The ideal times of year for trekking are when there is steady weather, clear skies, and moderate temperatures. Trekkers should plan ahead for flights, permits, and lodging because the trails are at their busiest during these months. While the monsoon season (June to September) brings heavy rain, landslides, and poor visibility, making trekking more challenging, winter (December to February) can be extremely cold with heavy snowfall.

Travel Insurance & Emergency Evacuation

Trekking to Everest Base Camp carries risks, including altitude sickness, injuries, and unpredictable weather conditions. As a result, comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended. Insurance should cover high-altitude trekking, medical emergencies, and helicopter evacuation, as the cost of a helicopter rescue from the Everest region can exceed USD 5,000. Trekkers should verify their insurance policy before departing to ensure they are covered for potential emergencies.

Everest Base Camp Trek

“Deepen was an excellent guide during my trip to EBC in 2019. He took really good care of our group of four and made sure that we all made it to our destination and back to Kathmandu safely and in time. He is very knowledgeable about the routes, about the culture of Nepal and answered all my questions with a lot of patience. Whenever he saw one of us struggling, he insisted on carrying our backpacks so we could walk with more ease. I would recommend Deepen highly for your next trek to Nepal.” ~ Ritu Kapur, Boston, USA

Everest Base Camp With Deepen

This was my second hike with Deepen’s company Jolly Himalaya. My first was Langtang. Deepen works hard to keep everyone in good spirits even when one is tired. Our group of five women ages 45-55 were lucky to have him and his assistant as our guides. He booked all our tea houses and our food was fresh and healthy. He walked with one of my friends who was struggling on a couple of days and he carried her backpack. The added bonus is that he takes excellent photos and videos of the group. I highly recommend Jolly Himalaya and deepen.
